Do you know what happened today in history 80 years ago?

On 24 July 1931, airship LZ-127 GRAF ZEPPELIN departed Friedrichshafen at 9.55 a.m. to fly to Berlin. It was the first leg of the famous Polar Flight. The next day the flight continued via Leningrad to Franz-Josephland to meet the Russian icebreaker Malyguin.

Polar Flight, German zeppelin on-board dispatch with icebreaker Malyguin arrival marking. The cover is franked with a full set of German Polar Flight stamps (the 2 RM stamp in blue shows the missing hyphen variety) and signatures from the LZ-127 GRAF ZEPPELIN crew including Hugo Eckener, Lehmann, Dörr, Pruss and Knut Eckener.

ZEPPELIN COLLECTORS MEETING AT STAMPSHOW AT COLUMBUS, OH
Zeppelin collectors meet at StampShow in Columbus, OH on Friday, 12 August 2011. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. For further details, see here: http://www.ezep.de/meet.html

eZEPtalk – FASCINATING STORIES FROM THE ZEPPELIN BOARD
eZEPtalk.de member pasol published a fascinating cover on eZEPtalk.de: A Russian Polar Flight dispatch from the icebreaker Malyguin. A full set on cover dispatched on the Malyguin is quite a rarity, but this cover is even more – it bears the perforated Russian zeppelin stamps postmarked on board the Malyguin on 18 July 1931.

Polar Flight, Russian dispatch from the icebreaker Malyguin with perforated stamps.

This cover was postmarked on 18 July 1931, a good week before the official first day of the perforated stamps on 24 July 1931, and it is so far the only recorded Malyguin dispatch with perforated stamps.

Is this a new discovery or what is the story behind it? We don’t know yet and the discussion is still going on….

Dear Aerophilatelist,

do you know what happened today in history 75 and 100 years ago?
Well, 75 years ago, on 10 April 1936, LZ-129 HINDENBURG arrived back at Friedrichshafen, the airship was returning from the first South America Flight 1936, the first intercontinental trip of the new airship.

And 100 years ago, on 10 April 1911, airship LZ-8 DEUTSCHLAND was transfered from Baden-Oos to Düsseldorf. Nothing special about this positioning flight, except that this was the first flight with an on-board cachet (Bordstempel).

Bordstempel of airship LZ-8 DEUTSCHLAND from 1911

The design of the Bordstempel from 1911 was used for numerous Bordstempel of other airships as well, like the Bordstempel of LZ-127 GRAF ZEPPELIN. And the 1911 design is even used for Bordstempel of the latest zeppelin NT airships, like the illustrated Bordstempel of airship D-LZZR BODENSEE.

The whole story of “100 years Bordstempel” can be read here: http://www.ezep.de/article/2011sp_100_years_bordstempel.html

ZEPPELIN POST JOURNAL – 100th issue
The Spring2011 issue of the ZEPPELIN POST JOURNAL is the 100th issue of this publication. And the topic of this jubilee issue is “100″ with interesting and fascinating articles about Count Zeppelin’s 100th birthday, LZ-100, flight number 100, 100 dropped pieces, registration number 100, R100 and 100 years Bordstempel, just to mention a few.

The jubilee issue will be mailed to subscribers mid of April, for a sneak preview see here: http://www.ezep.de/zpj/2011sp.html

eZEPtalk – FASCINATING STORIES FROM THE ZEPPELIN BOARD
According to an article by Cyril Deighton (“Some New Data on Irish Zeppelin post”, The Airpost Journal, November 1982, page 40-42), there are only 5 Irish covers known to have been flown on the 1st South America Flight 1932 of LZ-127 GRAF ZEPPELIN. Andreas Schlegel started a thread on http://www.ezeptalk.de/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=334 to find out more about the five covers from Ireland. The counting started and thanks to the help of our great zeppelin mail community, we have now traced 15 covers from Ireland on this first flight.

The whole story can be followed here on http://www.ezeptalk.de/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=334 de and the listing includes also images of all 15 recorded covers from Ireland. If you have another one in your collection, please report it.

Deutsche Version des April 2011 eZEP-Newsletters

Lieber Aerophilatelist,

ZEPPELIN POST JOURNAL – 100. Ausgabe

eZEPtalk – SPANNENDES AUS DEM ZEPPELIN FORUM

Südamerikafahrt 1932 kennt, soll ihn bitte hier melden.
