The illustrated cover was flown on that Olympic Flight 1936, it was dispatched at Prague, Czechoslovakia and came to Frankfurt where the special German Olympic postage was cancelled. Then the cover was flown by zeppelin to Berlin.

Do you know what happened today in history 80 years ago?

On 24 July 1931, airship LZ-127 GRAF ZEPPELIN departed Friedrichshafen at 9.55 a.m. to fly to Berlin. It was the first leg of the famous Polar Flight. The next day the flight continued via Leningrad to Franz-Josephland to meet the Russian icebreaker Malyguin.

Polar Flight, German zeppelin on-board dispatch with icebreaker Malyguin arrival marking. The cover is franked with a full set of German Polar Flight stamps (the 2 RM stamp in blue shows the missing hyphen variety) and signatures from the LZ-127 GRAF ZEPPELIN crew including Hugo Eckener, Lehmann, Dörr, Pruss and Knut Eckener.

ZEPPELIN COLLECTORS MEETING AT STAMPSHOW AT COLUMBUS, OH
Zeppelin collectors meet at StampShow in Columbus, OH on Friday, 12 August 2011. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. For further details, see here: http://www.ezep.de/meet.html

eZEPtalk – FASCINATING STORIES FROM THE ZEPPELIN BOARD
eZEPtalk.de member pasol published a fascinating cover on eZEPtalk.de: A Russian Polar Flight dispatch from the icebreaker Malyguin. A full set on cover dispatched on the Malyguin is quite a rarity, but this cover is even more – it bears the perforated Russian zeppelin stamps postmarked on board the Malyguin on 18 July 1931.

Polar Flight, Russian dispatch from the icebreaker Malyguin with perforated stamps.

This cover was postmarked on 18 July 1931, a good week before the official first day of the perforated stamps on 24 July 1931, and it is so far the only recorded Malyguin dispatch with perforated stamps.

Is this a new discovery or what is the story behind it? We don’t know yet and the discussion is still going on….

The full thread is here: http://www.ezeptalk.de/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=378
